A multi-faceted approach
In 2007, we started work on a wide-ranging initiative to improve governance and access to information through support for Iraqi media. In partnership with Albany Associates and IREX Europe, our aim was to tackle a wide range of issues that undermine the media's capacity to investigate, inform and report in Iraq.
We worked with Iraqi media professionals to develop a 'Code of Professional Conduct' for Iraqi broadcast media. The Code has generated widespread interest and support from the media and government since its launch in February 2008.
Albany Associates assisted the Communications and Media Commission to conduct a review of draft media laws, with a view to improving the draft laws and eliminating draconian punishments for journalists.
IREX Europe produced the second Media Sustainability Index for Iraq. This document measures progress to date across the media sector, and is based on evidence provided by working journalists, academics, activists and government officials.
