Contributing to education in Afghanistan

The books will contribute to the education of Afghan children.
The BBC World Service Trust's Afghan education project (AEP) has donated over 130,000 children's books and 30,000 cartoon magazines to the Afghan ministry of education.

These colourfully illustrated publications have been developed by the project’s cartoonists and writers for readers of all ages.

‘These are amazing books. We will distribute them to schools and libraries all over the country’ said Siddique Patman, Afghan deputy education minister.

The minister also welcomed AEP’s contribution to distance learning in Afghanistan.

Each year the project publishes new books in Dari and Pashto - some tell folkloric tales, while others are distance learning tools.

The cartoon magazine, which is the print version of AEP's popular radio soap, New Home, New Life, reinforces the educational messages conveyed in the soap.

In 2003, AEP donated 88,000 books to the ministry. AEP writers hope to continue working with government ministries to develop new material in the future.
