Guide: Key players in development

world
Many agencies, organisations, institutions, programmes and groups are involved in influencing progress towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

The goals and targets provide a framework for the whole United Nations system with certain UN programmes and agencies having particularly important roles to play.

The goals are also influencing the policies, strategies and funding priorities of International Financial institutions, in particular the World Bank, as well as various Regional Development Banks and government agencies and departments.

Progress

Various trading blocks and bilateral groups and the policies they pursue also impact on progress towards the MDGs.

Finally, there are numerous Non Governmental and civic society organisations that through their development assistance or advocacy work also have an impact on meeting the MDGs.

Some work on the ground in poor countries and so have a good understanding of local needs; others have an influence by scrutinising and criticising the policies and strategies of the leading players.
