The journey through the archipelago began in the Malaysian capital, Kuala Lumpur.

For many Muslims, Malaysia – with its skyscrapers, shopping centres and "tiger" economy – offers a model of how Islam and modernity can co-exist.

Dominated for more than two decades by former prime minister Mahathir Mohamed, the country has now entered what many hope will be an era of consolidation under the calm and cautious Abdullah Badawi.

The feeling that a new page has been turned was encouraged by the release of the popular Muslim politician Anwar Ibrahim – once seen as Mahathir's successor - after six years in prison.
