Half a million women die during pregnancy and childbirth each year, and four million newborn babies die in the first month of life. A lot of these deaths could be prevented with simple medical interventions.
The slogan for World Health Day 2005 on April 7th is "Make every mother and child count." It reflects the reality that the health of women and children is not a high enough priority for many governments and the international community.
