The World Bank group aims to fight poverty and improve the living standards of people in the developing world by providing loans, advice, technical support and knowledge.

Role and function

The World Bank Group is one of the largest sources of development assistance and offers support to developing country governments to help build schools and health centres, provide water and electricity, fight disease, and protect the environment.

The World Bank Group is run like a cooperative with member countries acting as shareholders - the number of shares a country has is based on the size of that country’s economy.

The World Bank Group consists of five closely associated institutions, each with its own distinct role to play.
