What is space for?

The original motivation for most nations’ space programmes has been military, but that has soon lead to a desire for the political kudos and public acclaim that comes from peaceful space exploration. How can this be justified, particularly by nations where there is malnutrition and a shortage of clean drinking water?

The direct benefits of space flights are part of most of our lives today: fast and reliable communications, multi-channel TV reception, accurate weather forecasts and so on.

Programme four asks whether there are things that should not be allowed in space, perhaps certain military applications should be banned?

Should the sole reason for space flight be commercial? Or can we put a value on the cultural benefits?

Profits from space?

The image of our planet photographed from space has become the icon of the space age. Can space exploration help free us from the psychological bonds of our petty squabbles here on Earth?

Commercial companies are beginning to get interested in space, and not only as contractors for the big government agencies. Are there profits to be made? Should space be open to free enterprise?
