Nickens Nkoso

Nickens Nkoso
Percussionist, singer and dancer Nickens Nkoso is the leader of the band Kasaļ Masaļ.

Well known as a soukous musician, Nkoso wanted to retrieve something from his past.

"One day I was listening to traditional Congolese music and I got so emotional. I realised that if I didn't play it, it would pass away."

Mostly singing songs from the Mongo Tribe based in the north of the DRC, he describes the music as the traditional sound of a remote equatorial African village with a twist of London added.

Brought up in a small village, Nkoso's family were renowned as musicians, and he studied singing and percussion with his father and grandfather.

After moving to the town when he was 18, Nkoso quickly established his musical reputation, and when he moved to the UK in 1992, the Congolese musical community were very pleased to welcome him.

"One of the best gigs we have done was in Kilburn Park Festival.

It's great to play for everyone, but there were also a lot of Congolese. They loved it, because they miss this music too."
