Changing Culture

In June 1999, Bhutan became the last nation on earth to turn on television.
A special documentray visits the Himalayan kingdom to see what impact the invasion of television has had on a society still rooted in Buddhist thinking.

How far have traditional values withstood the tide of commercialism, soap operas, sport and thrillers that now pour in from a host of channels?

How far can the local media respond to this challenge and maintain a distinctive Bhutanese flavour in their programmes?

Television novices, used only to hearing the pronouncements of their king and their spiritual leaders, have now seen their first war, their first Arsenal v Manchester United football match and their first fashion channel.

For those of us sitting on the sofas across the world, how the kingdom is affected by TV may well help to find an answer to the question that has evaded us: have we become the product of what we watch?

Evaluating the impact of television in Bhutan is a journey into the impact of television on us all.
