The Afghan Aid Effort

Afghan National Guards
New recruits in the Afghan National Guard who receive their training from the international community

Billions of dollars or international aid money is pouring into Afghanistan to try and rebuild the shattered country. But is the money being well spent? Scores of foreign agencies are operating in the country with little central coordination.

Questions are also being asked about whether the muddle and waste that arises from this multiciplicity of agencies is contributing to the growing unpopularity of the Kabul government - the very government that the international community wants to strengthen.

For Assignment, George Arney travelled to Kabul to find out.

First broadcast April 2008
