Mr Alemanno is a former youth leader of the neo-fascist MSI

Gianni Alemanno is the newly elected right wing mayor of Rome. As a young man his nickname was lupomanno, or wolf man, because of his strong personality.

Voted in on a wave of anti-immigrant sentiment, Mr Alemanno was once a youth leader of the neo-fascist Italian Social Movement.

He says he is now a reformed man, a centre right moderate, working to solve Rome's problems. But others are not so sure.

For Assignment Christian Fraser goes in search of the real Gianni Alemanno and asks whether, as many people are saying, a 'veil of fascism' has really descended upon Rome.
