Introduction ![]() What can you hear right now? Is it the beckoning call of a nightingale or a street-hawker? Or is it a jet flying above you? Sounds used to be able to define where you were in the world, informing you about what was occurring around you. Travelling to a different place meant hearing new, unique noises. Now, much of the world's rich and diverse sound landscapes are fading away, if not lost. Continuous, machine-made noises encroach on just about every corner of our planet. They transform and homogenise our sound environments, making it difficult for us to distinguish one sound from another. How does noise affect us? Has sound become a drug we all have to take? And what can we do to create a better sonic future? |
