Costa Rica is one of the most bio-diverse places on earth.

It takes seriously its responsibilty for the environment, and 27% of the country's forest, mangrove, beaches and volcanic terrain is protected as national park.

The question is how the country can afford to pay for the upkeep and policing of those parks.

Currently eco-tourism works well, and with low impact on the natural environment - but it does not produce enough revenue.

What can Costa Rica do, except give in to those who wish to build big hotels and resorts that will damage the very things the tourists come to see?
