Faliraki

In the summer of 2003 many bar and club owners, hoteliers and tour
operators made a good deal of money out of Faliraki on the island of Rhodes.

Assisted by a British TV series that highlighted the drunkenness and bad behaviour of young holidaymakers in the resort, thousands
came with the intention of doing the same.

But the drinks and parties decended into violence, and British police were sent to the island to advise the local force.

Then, tragically two young men died. There was a massive clampdown and business in Faliraki collapsed. Susan Marling discovers the lessons that have been learned since the tourism bubble burst.
