He considers himself "lucky" because he was able to get his primary education there. At the time, each family would only send one child to school. At 13-years-old he left the village to stay with his grandfather in the capital Cotonou, and go to secondary school. He returned home to see his family once or twice a year. Aged 19 he went to Algeria and then went to Italy and Germany where he stayed for several years. He spent five years in Berlin in the production department at the school of cinema, and at a television company where he made documentaries. Si-Gueriki is his first film, which delves deeply into his own life.
