Nigerian/British actor Chiwetel Ejiofor on Africa Live
Actor Chiwetel Ejiofor connects with the continent on Africa Live

Have Your Say on Africa Live

On Wednesday 26 February, you joined the Africa Live team to have your say on many aspects of African film.

Guests on the programme included Nigerian/British actor Chiwetel Ejiofor, the star of Dirty Pretty Things, and Ghana's Akosua Busia who starred in The Colour Purple.

Many listeners said they aren't happy with the image of Africa which is often portrayed on the silver screen.

Chadian Director Mahamet Salah Haroun spoke about the importance of true to life Africa being given its rightful place in the world of film.

Listeners from across the continent sent in emails and text messages to the programme.

Some opinions were also not what one might have expected.

One listener in South Africa emailed to say he is very happy for American actor Morgan Freeman to be playing the role of Mandela in the forthcoming film Long Walk to Freedom, because he thinks he is the best actor in the world!

A group of Ghanaian film students visiting FESPACO struggled to name some African film actors, illustrating the point that African film still has a long way to go in terms of promoting itself.

An actress from Cote d'Ivoire wrote in to congratulate Chiwetel Ejiofor for his recent success with Dirty Pretty Things, and said he was leading the way for all African actors.

One email from Ethiopia said that the whole concept of "making it" in the film industry is a western one.

Our thanks to everyone for their contributions to a lively debate on BBC Africa Live.
