Best actor and actress awards

Tunisian actress Awatef Jendoubi has won the award for best actress at FESPACO 2003.

She played her first lead role as Fatma in the film of the same name which was directed by fellow Tunisian Khaled Ghorbal.

She also added a touch of Hollywood to proceedings at FESPACO when she broke down in tears when receiving her prize.

The award for best actor went to Cheick Doukoure of Guinea who directed as well as starred in Paris Selon Moussa (Paris according to Moussa).

Doukoure plays the part of Moussa in a film which follows the very popular theme at this year's FESPACO, of immigrant communities in Europe.

In his acceptance speech Doukoure said he was particularly honoured to win the award in the year FESPACO had chosen actors as their festival theme.

Awatef Jendoubi has had to fly in the face of traditional values and her family, to work in her chosen profession.

She is also known for her critical views on traditional Tunisian society where she says the man "still behaves like a master"."

The closing ceremony for FESPACO 2003 was filled with music and a spectacular fireworks display for the entire city of Ouagadougou to enjoy.
