The organizers have issued invitations via the UNDP to Eddie Murphy, Denzil Washington, Whoopi Goldberg and Sidney Poitier among others. Mr. Hama laughed as he confided that some of them had been asking where Burkina Faso is! He went on to say that many of them had given an enthusiastic response but had a very full work schedule to consider before giving him their final decision. The central theme for this year’s Fespaco focuses on African actors and actresses. Mr. Hama said that although Africa doesn’t yet have its own ‘stars’ as such, he is hopeful that this year’s festival will get the best actors and actresses together. “Fespaco 2003 will be a good forum for them to promote their work” he said adding that he is hopeful that in a few years time, Africa will have its own famous stars. Mr. Hama said he is hopeful many of the problems at the last edition of the festival will be avoided. In 2001 travel problems on Air Afrique meant that some directors and even some films didn’t arrive in time. He explained that African film makers often wanted to arrive for the festival with their film literally in their hands, which only creates problems for the organizers. “For example, all the African/American film makers have already sent their films to us by courier. This is a professional way of working. The rules clearly state that the films must be with us by mid-February." "It’s not always our fault, if we want this event to set an example, then the film makers themselves must work together with the organisers". |
