Getting Ready

Jonathan Edwards looks at the preparations made by the athletes and the authorities who organised the Games.

A month before the Games began a Truce was declared, so athletes and spectators could travel safely to Olympia.

Only men could watch the Games, and only men were allowed to take part in the Games. As the Games approached spectators set up a vast tented city in Olympia where water was short and sanitation non-existent.

Like their modern counterparts, Greek sportsmen followed strict training regimes and diets. They did their training in a Gymnasium, which translates literally as ‘Nuditorium’.
