Algeria

France, by admission of a key insider in the Quai D'Orsay, has a "certain influence" in Algeria - a country which, because of its colonial history, is frequently referred to as France's "backyard".

The programme examines the political and economic influence that France has been exerting on the country in recent years.

"Algeria is fascinating partly because of the role France has played in helping Algeria, after its collapse in the 1990s," Little says.

"How did the Algerian state pull back from chaos? How did it persuade its Islamic fundamentalists to accept accommodation within a secular state, after the devastation of the last decade?

It is a great example of a state that has brought itself back from terror."
