Violence: A Universal Challenge
Violence can be verbal, physical, sexual, psychological or financial. It can take place in the home, in the community, on the pitch. It can be directed against the self.
The reasons for violence are complex. Research has explored whether violence is triggered by biological factors, or results from environmental causes. Sometimes violence is supported by the community.
In response to the WHO's World Report on Violence and Health, the Global Campaign for Violence Prevention was set up, but what progress has it made?
In a special season of programmes entitled Violence Begins At Home, BBC World Service examines how the cycle of violence can be difficult to break. It also shows there are people working to change the lives of victims and to alter the behaviour of perpetrators.
