A cancer patient in Jamaica. Radiation treatment machine in background

Radiation therapy for cancer patients

There is an explosion of cancer cases in the developing world but fifty per cent of them could be cured with timely, accurate radiation therapy.

"The numbers are overwhelming" explains cancer specialist Dr. Dirangu at the Kenyatta Hospital, Nairobi which has the only, ageing, public cancer treatment unit in Kenya.

"Most of our technicians are over-worked working 14 hour days because of the numbers".

But the cure can also kill.

Have all the countries that have radiation therapy units got the safeguards in place to be sure they give the right dose and do not get into the hands of those who could use them in a dirty bomb?
