![]() Elections Preparations for the first democratic elections for the Congo in three decades are way behind schedule.
UN spokesman Patricia Tome complains that the Congolese public has unrealistic expectations of the multilateral force. People want jobs and security, but also resent the UN for co-operating with militia leaders who now run the provisional government. Dr Mbwebwe Kabamba, leader of the left-wing opposition party Front National, says the ruling warlords-turned-politicians have a vested interest in obstructing the peace process. Meanwhile, relations between French-speaking Congo and its English-speaking neighbours to the east, particularly Rwanda, are fraught.
