For a long time education programmes have advocated abstinence, faithfulness and condoms to control the spread of HIV and Aids. But a new generation of preventative measures have been developed: microbicide gel which is designed to kill infectious micro-organisms; and a new version of the female condom that looks like a small sock.
But despite the availability of other options, how much more of an impact will new products make?
