Sandra Grant

Sandra Grant’s parents come from Jamaica. She trained as hairdresser but now runs a Caribbean restaurant, Scorpio's Chicken on Bruce Grove.

“Walking down Bruce Grove one day I saw a shop to rent. Sixty-three quid a week it said and I thought I must be able to do something with that.

So I got this shop. I had no training, no cash flow, no business forecast but I thought I’ll open a restaurant.

I had booked a holiday to go to Jamaica. When I got to the airport in Jamaica I saw my sister and she said, “You have got to taste this chicken.”

She bought me this chicken and I ate it. I thought this chicken is the bomb. It’s the absolute bee’s knees.

“When the holiday was over we came back to England and put all of our efforts into getting this restaurant open. I used to go to my mum’s garage in the evening and cook this jerk chicken.

On the first day we opened I chopped up the chicken and gave it away. By the second week everyone who came to the shop came for jerk chicken.

I’ve always had the idea for this shop. I knew that I wanted it to be painted green for the grass of Jamaica, gold for the sun and have the black of the people. So when you opened the door it was in your face.”
