 Anand's story My name is Anand Arumugam Vathiyar. My story is related to the September 11, 2001 attack on the World Trade Center in New York.
In November 2002 Fred Dove did a feature on the window cleaner who washed the windows of the Twin Towers. He was a Macedonian immigrant and had been hired when the Twin Towers had first opened. He went on to become a minor celebrity in New York appearing on TV and even children's books. He died with the destruction of the Towers.
In flashback interviews with him, the window cleaner, very proud of his job, mentioned how he would always take his visiting family/relatives up to the top of the Towers whenever they visited New York. His pride for his job seemed second only for the love of his family and children. That story stayed with me for days. I told everyone about it, colleagues, friends, family. And it made me realise that life indeed was fleeting. And that despite my successful career, the pride of an honest day's living was nothing without having a family to share it with. I proposed to my then-fiance-now-wife shortly after that. And now, Rowena and I listen to Fred Dove/BBC together on our ride home every evening.
