"Surgeons
were able to enter the body’s cavities such as
the abdomen, the chest, the skull in order to
perform operations in which a great deal of time
was required.
You
can actually operate on a bone or a joint very
quickly but to enter the abdomen, remove an appendix,
to enter the chest, to remove a piece of lung
and so forth, you do need time.
And
undoubtedly, anaesthetics were one of the fundamental
technologies that permitted this sort of surgery."
