Dr Gro Brundtland was the youngest person, and
the first ever woman Prime Minister of Norway. Before
entering politics, she was a doctor working in the field
of public health, where her conviction of the link between
health and the environment was formed. She gained international
recognition as the chair of the World Commission on Environment
and Development, which championed the principle of sustainable
development. In 1998, she was appointed the Director-General
of the World Health Organisation. |

| Professor
Robert Baker has been a Professor of Philosophy at
Union College, Schenectady, since 1973. A frequent contributor
and reviewer for bioethics and philosophy journals, he
has written extensively on historical and modern medical
morality, as well as co-editing 6 books and producing
over 100 articles, papers and reviews, and government
reports. He is currently collaborating on a project to
create a one-volume global history of medical ethics. |

Professor Norman Sartorius joined the World Health
Organisation (WHO) in 1967, as a principal investigator
on several international studies into schizophrenia, depression
and health service delivery.
As the Director of the Division of Mental Health at WHO,
he developed international strategies for primary prevention
projects for mental health.
He is President of the Association of European Psychiatrists,
and holds professional appointments at universities in
Europe, the USA and China. |

Life expectancy is increasing in virtually every country
in the world, and has become a crucial global development
issue.
Dr Mary Ann Tsao is a board member of Helpage International,
an organisation that runs programmes to support some of
the world's most vulnerable older people. As President
and Chief Executive of the respected Tsao Foundation in
Singapore, she is involved with the promotion of policy
and provision of innovative community care. |

Professor Günter Blobel is a cell biologist, based
at the Rockefeller University, where he has worked since
1967.
The pioneering research by Dr Blobel and his associates
into cell structures, has had an enormous influence on
the understanding of many diseases, including cystic fibrosis,
Alzheimer's disease and AIDS. Professor Blobel has received
numerous awards for his research and in 1999, was awarded
the Nobel Prize in Medicine. |
