  Sodium fizzes when you put it in water. It does not turn purple and it does not sink - it floats! It may or may not explode depending on the amount of (sodium) metal that is exposed to the water. When sodium reacts with water it forms sodium hydroxide and hydrogen gas. Sodium hydroxide is an alkali, which is why sodium is sometimes called an alkali metal.
