There are now no BBC short-wave transmissions for Australia. However, there are several other ways to listen:
Local Stations
BBC World Service has numerous local AM and FM partner stations in Australia which broadcast selected BBC World Service programmes or continuous segments of programming.
- ABC's (Australian Broadcasting Corporation) NewsRadio service carries a number of BBC news programmes, as wewll as broadcasting BBC World Service overnight on the following frequencies:
FM – Darwin 102.5 FM, Gold Coast 95.7 FM, Gosford 98.2
Medium wave (AM) - Adelaide 972, Brisbane 936, Canberra 1440, Hobart 747, Melbourne 1026, Newcastle 1458, Perth 585, Sydney 630
- ABC's Radio National broadcasts BBC correspondents' reports on weekdays at 0605 EST and occasional BBC features. For more information visit the website or call 02 933 1500
- SBS broadcasts BBC WS overnight. For more information see local press or visit the website
- Over 60 community radio stations broadcast a selection of BBC WS programmes. See local listings for further information. The following stations carry the BBC overnight:
Adelaide (5RPH) 1197 AM, Bendigo (3BPH) 88.5 FM, Brisbane (4RPH) 1296 AM, Canberra (1RPH) 1125 AM, Fremantle (6CCR) 107.9 FM, Hobart (7RPH) 106.9 FM, 864 AM, Melbourne (3RPH) 1179 AM, Perth (6RPH) 990 AM, Shepparton (3SPH) 100.1 FM, Sydney (2RPH) 1224 AM
Hi-Band
In Sydney, BBC World Service can be heard 24 hours a day on local hi-band subscription services, using a specialised radio. A similar service will be launched in Canberra in November. For information and radio purchase, contact:
