More US casualties surviving and returning from Iraq war

US Soldiers in Iraq
US Soldiers in Iraq
Until relatively recently, if you were a soldier injured on the battlefield, the likelihood was that you would die of your injuries.

But now, thanks to huge advances in medical technology, many more wounded soldiers survive, although often the severity of their injuries means that they will never fully recover.

Many American soldiers are returning from Iraq with severe injuries, and their fate is becoming a significant issue in the run-up to next year's presidential election.

Newshour's Claire Bolderson reports from Ohio, one of the states that's suffered the most casualties in Iraq.

First broadcast 29th October
