Congo Gold: Is the UN Blocking an Enquiry?
The BBC has found that an internal United Nations enquiry into allegations of gold trafficking by Pakistani peacekeepers may have been blocked for political reasons. The UN's investigation has uncovered evidence that certain Pakistani peacekeepers in the Democratic Republic of Congo were rearming militia groups in return for gold. But the investigation, which began in early 2006, has so far produced no results.
A UN official connected with the enquiry has told the BBC that there seems to have been a plan to bury it, to avoid alienating Pakistan -- the largest contributor of troops to the UN. Our correspondent Martin Plaut has been to the town of Mongbwalu in eastern Congo. As part of his investigation Martin Plaut went to Kinshasa to interview William Swing, the head of the UN mission in Congo. First broadcast 23rd May
