Dark Horse Emerging in French Election Campaign
 
Bayrou
Francois Bayrou grew up on a farm in the Pyrenees.
It was touted as a two-horse race but a third contender has muscled his way into the French presidential contest.

The centrist candidate and outside bet Francois Bayrou is closing fast on the two front runners, the socialist Segolene Royal, and right winger Nicolas Sarkozy.

A survey carried out by the Parisien newspaper found that Mr. Bayrou would get twenty four per cent of the vote in the first round of the election, just one point behind Ms. Royal and two behind Mr. Sarkozy.

 They are horrified. The Sarkozy camp are extremely worried because they realise Bayrou may become the candidate of the ABS - Anything But Sarkozy.

And in even better news for Mr Bayrou, the same survey predicted that if the election went to a second round he would defeat Mr.Sarkozy.

Jean Louis Bourlanges is a Member of the European Parliament for Mr Bayrou's party, the UDF (or Union for French Democracy), who says Mr Bayrou can offer an alternative to both left and right:
