After Kofi Annan | |||||||||||||
UN Secretary General Kofi Annan steps down at the end of the year and in a special edition of Newshour four of the seven candidates make their pitch and tell their stories. Sashi Tharoor of India, Ashraf Ghani from Afghanistan, Latvia's President Veeka Free burger and from Sri Lanka Juyantha Dunapala are four of the candidates who are each hoping to take over from Mr Annan. First Half: BBC's Owen Bennett-Jones began by asking each of them in turn what they saw as the main threat, first of all, the Indian candidate, currently a UN Under Secretary General, 28 years in the UN, close to Kofi Annan, Shashi Tharoor. The Nos: At the moment 7 people are official candidates. We spoke to four of them. The Nos came from Jordan's Prince Zeid Hussien, he was on a flight at the time of the debate and couldn't do it . The candidate from Thailand, the deputy prime minister, said NO but his bid is effectively over because of the recent coup. Which leaves the South Korean foreign minister Ban Ki Moon who many reckon is the leading candidate. He is in New York at the moment but he said he didn't want to take part and that he was too busy. Despite his reticence we thought it important to let people hear from Mr Ban so here's a short excerpt from a recent speech he gave to the Council on Foreign Relations in the US. Back to the Debate: First of all we return to Ashraf Ghani, does he think coming from a country in conflict is a problem and how can he convince the Security Council that an Afghan candidate is an appropriate candidate?
