Naxalite Journey

Indian States map
Jill travels into the jungle of the central Indian state of Chhattisgarh
In this three part series the BBC's Jill McGivering travels with the Indian Maoist fighters, we hear from them, the civilians they affect and the authorities who are trying to maintain control.

Part 1 - Maoist Fighters
The prospect of Maoist rebels, who are also known as Naxolites, in Nepal being part of a new power sharing government has been greeted with delight by some Maoist militants in neighbouring India. In the last year, India's Maoist rebels have emerged as a more unified, more efficient military force. India's Prime Minister Manmohan Singh recently described them as the biggest single internal security threat India's ever faced.

Jill McGivering spent three days travelling with Maoist fighters in the jungle of the central Indian state of Chhattisgarh. In this first report we meet the Naxalites and what they are fighting for.

Part 2 - Government Response
The Indian government is experimenting with new ways of fighting back against the Naxalites, who now operate in almost half of the country's 28 states. In the last year, the state government has introduced new anti-terrorism training for the police, and is backing a civil militia called Salwa Judum.

In the second part of Jill McGivering's series she sees the immediate effect has been a dramatic increase in the level of violence and some analysts now describe the state as close to civil war.

Part 3 - Caught in the Fighting

As many a hundred thousand villagers, caught in the middle of the growing violence, have been forced to flee their homes and land. About half taking protection in Maoist controlled areas, the rest in government-run relief camps. However, as Jill McGivering reports in the third of her reports from Chhattisgarh, many of those displaced are now starving and desperate.
