Latest Edition: 21st March Stand By Me This week we hear the story of the song Stand By Me which was originally a gospel song registered at the American Copyright office in 1905. It was first recorded by Sam Cooke and The Soul Stirrers, and then taken up by others including John Lennon who recorded the song when he was estranged from his wife Yoko Ono. But it was Ben E. King's version, written on a cheap guitar in his bedroom, which became a soul classic and went on to establish him as a major solo artist. It even became the title and soundtrack of a film based on a book by Stephen King.
