Rosaries and prayer beads

Catholic Christians use them in five sets of ten, Muslims have ninety-nine and Hindus one hundred and eight - but what unites all these faiths is that they use strings of beads as an aid to prayer.

Join Michael Ford as he goes on a journey to discover what it is about prayer with beads that's so meaningful to people of very different traditions.

Young Catholic offenders at a prison near London tell us how saying the rosary helps them cope with anger and depression in jail.

Prisoners of conscience in the former Soviet Union so much wanted to have beads to pray with that they used their rations of black bread to make them.

And an Orthodox priest and former monk explains why the seemingly endless repetition of certain prayers can empty the mind to make space for God.
