In this week’s In Concert we have the chance once again, to enjoy the natural exuberance and personal charm of the late soprano Lucia Popp. Popp had a wonderfully warm voice with a vivacious personality to match. She was ideally suited to sing folk-inspired music by Dvorak, Mahler and Brahms. She was also capable of bringing out the drama in more complex songs, such as the madness of the protagonist in the three Ophelia Songs by Richard Strauss. Martin Handley presents another chance to hear a memorable performance during the late 1980’s at the Edinburgh festival when Popp was at the peak of her formidable powers.
