Gun violence:
Weapons left over from the 12-year civil war has turned El Salvador into one of the most heavily militarised countries in the world. During the mid-1990s more people died as a result of gun violence than during the conflict itself. At one point the annual gun homicide rate was 140 for every 100,000 people - several hundred times the rate in countries like Japan and the UK. |
