Water: communities worldwide are fighting to improve their supply
Water: communities worldwide are fighting to improve their supply

2003 is the United Nations International Year of Fresh Water. Additionally a millennium goal has been set to radically reduce the number of people without a good water supply by 2015.

Although more than a billion people are struggling to survive without access to clean water around the world, there are thousands of success stories in the fight to provide clean water to the world's poor.

Different projects are solving a range of water supply problems thereby preserving and transforming people's lives.

BBC World Service visits Kenya, Ethiopia, Bangladesh and India to learn about a variety of very different water solutions.

Programme one of Solutions:
George Alagiah explores one of the biggest stories on the planet: the growing water crisis.
He starts out in Ethiopia where farming people walk many hours to bring small amounts of unclean water back to the homestead, and where children bear the brunt of water borne disease.

Programme two of Solutions:
George Alagiah visits one of the countries which has done the most to tackle water provision problems in recent years - Bangladesh.

But these solutions don't always last. Despite its success Bangladesh is now facing a catastrophe because arsenic in the water is slowly poisoning the people.

Programme three of Solutions:
George Alagiah reports from water-scarce Kenya. He meets slum dwellers in Nairobi and rural Maasai women who are changing their beliefs and behaviour concerning water; in this way they are improving their quality of life.

He also discovers that people in Kenya are being encouraged, by community leaders to find their voice and demand their right to an adequate water supply.

Programme four of Solutions:
George Alagiah reports on the desperate shortage of water in the city of Calcutta.

He asks the vexing question of whether water provision is best carried out by public bodies or private companies. And can India's water problems be solved by taking court action?

The series concludes by asking: Has the millennium goal to radically reduce the number of people without a good water supply by 2015 any chance of being met?

> Listen to programme four

Solutions was broadcast during April and May 2003 on the BBC World Service
