We are all familiar with the American superheroes Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman, but what about Muslim superheroes, THE 99?

THE 99 are so called because the characters are based on the 99 attributes of Allah.

And these new superheroes have already appeared alongside their American counterparts in a special set of comics, and are about to feature in a new TV series.

The man behind THE 99 is the Kuwaiti Muslim psychologist, Dr Naif Al-Mutawa.

His life is a balancing act as he divides his time between Kuwait and the USA, and his work between the world of comics and practising psychology.

Naif says he first fell in love with comic books when he was sent to summer camp in America during his school holidays.

Outlook's Matthew Bannister spoke to Dr Naif Al-Mutawa from New York to find out more about the inspiration behind these new Muslim superheroes.
