Michelle Obama says that the surge in childhood obesity in the United States is nothing short of a public health crisis. One in three children is overweight or obese, and the First Lady says many are on track to live shorter lives than their parents as a result. She's making the issue her personal cause this year and will announce details of her campaign in the next few weeks.

11-year-old Dawson MacKay has been battling obesity since the age of eight. He's become a youth advisor to the Alliance for a Healthier Generation.

Dawson plays soccer, basketball and wrestlesand both his parents are nutritionalists, but despite this he is still overweight.

He says .. "I was pretty disappointed in myself - my parents kept telling me I had to lose some weight, my goal is to lose about 10 lbs by the end of the year."

Outlook's Jane O'Brien went along to meet him at his local sports centre in Washington
