Dr George Tiller was shot dead in church on the 31st May 2009. He was controversial because he offered 'late' abortions - medical terminations of pregnancy after the 24th week.

The practice is legal in the USA if the woman's life or health is at risk.

There is fierce opposition to abortion in America, and those carrying out the procedure can be the targets of attack.

Dr LeRoy Carhart was Dr Tiller's friend and colleague. He worked alongside him at his clinic in Kansas.

Dr Carhart is now planning to carry on Dr Tiller's work at his own practice in Nebraska.

He has received death threats in the past, but feels it is important to offer the procedure if a woman's life is in danger.

Dr Carhart told Outlook's Matthew Bannister how he first heard about Dr Tiller's shooting.
