Lawrence Anthony likes a challenge and isn't afraid to put himself at risk to help animals in need.
In 2003, he made headlines when he travelled to Iraq to rescue animals caught in the crossfire at Baghdad Zoo.
Next, he adopted a herd of traumatised elephants. They were facing certain death if he didn't look after them, so Lawrence took them back to his game reserve, Thula Thula, in Zululand.
The elephants were dangerous and unpredictable. They regularly tried to escape and at one point even charged at Lawrence, attempting to kill him.
But Lawrence earned their trust. He's now formed such a bond with the herd that he's been nicknamed 'the elephant whisperer'.
Lawrence visited the Outlook studios and explained to Matthew Bannister why no other game keepers had wanted to look after the rogue elephants.
