I couldn't have done it without
my family

Listen All about: I couldn't have done it ...

Families, it seems, aren't only about love and protection. Often, they also enable us to get along in life. We turn to close relations and distant kin alike for shelter, advice and material help.

In this week's True Lives, we hear about your experiences of family support.

"It was on November 14th 2001 that I discovered a swelling on the left of my neck. The doctor recommended a biopsy to gain a specimen for further investigations. When I was told this, I immediately started counting my days!

I feared I had cancer.

When I told my husband about it he simply said "It is not cancer; the results will prove it".

But I was worried. What worried me most was the money involved in the biopsy operation - and the radiotherapy, should cancer be detected. The amounts involved were impossible to me.

So if I was cancer positive, there was no hope of prolonging my life through treatment.

A few days later I shared my news with my big brother and a close family friend. My family friend said she was praying for me.

But through my brother, all the family members combined to raise money for my possible treatment. I was ready for the radiotherapy now, if I needed it. Now my main concern was the operating theatre - I was scared to death.

My 13-year old son did a lot to prepare me. He'd had two operations. "It's simple mum, if you have the courage" he said. "It's just a deep, sweet sleep". He spoke from experience, and I believed him.

My 10-year old daughter also cheered me up, monitoring the swelling. I called her my 'quack'.

When I awoke after the surgery on 7th March 2002, there were sixteen stitches across my neck! The doctor had removed the entire swelling.

When the results of the analysis came through, my legs were too weak to support me, I was so nervous. My husband supported me to the doctor's room.

But guess what? It was not cancerous! The swelling was just a tumour of the muscle.

No further treatment was needed. The prayers of the righteous had not been in vain.

It is now 6 months since the operation. I am almost fully recovered, and doing fine.

But I couldn't have done it without my family."

"Every night that I survived another beating, another night of being strangled, and my bones being broken, I would lie in the dark praying that my father wouldn't come back to do more.

Then I would pray to God that a special man would come into my life who wouldn't treat me badly.

I prayed for a strong man who was peaceful.

I prayed that we could have a family, and that we would work with counsellors to help me break the cycle of child abuse in my family.

Well, I have just turned 36 and my husband, Mark, has been the answer to all my prayers.

We have been together 19 years this October. Our two children are gifted and excel at school. And we did break the cycle of abuse, through my husband's support of going to counselling.

We are happy, without my original family. I couldn't have done it alone. Thank you Mark. I love you."
