Tour the Buddhist Garden
Take a tour around a Japanese-style Buddhist garden
in Newark, Nottinghamshire, in the Midlands of England. Join
the World Service and our guide, Buddha Maitraya, a former
Zen Buddhist monk.
For the last twenty years Buddha Maitraya has been constructing
this oasis of peace. The garden is a miniature recreation
of the hilly landscape of Japan.
The stone inscription at the entrance to the garden reads
'Heaven is here on Earth'. This inscription alerts
visitors to the fact that they can use the garden as a practical
aid to devotion. By spending time within the garden they can
awaken their inner beauty and truth.
In Buddhist philosophy the natural world is real, beautiful
and a source of peace; while our material man-made world is
an illusion which cannot provide us with tranquillity.
Every aspect of this Buddhist garden has been carefully designed
to connect visitors to their spirituality. Visit the Zen
garden, the tea house, a bridge and the
carp pool in order to discover their spiritual significance
within Buddhism.
