I have a right to... Programme 1

In 'I have a right to...' Dan Damon presents the first of a three-part documentary series examining the impact on human rights of the September 11 attacks.

From new anti-terrorism laws in Europe and the United States to crackdowns on political opposition in developing countries, the so-called "War on Terror" has, in the eyes of many human rights campaigners, prompted an erosion of civil liberties around the world.

In the first programme, Dan assesses the immediate reaction to September 11 - the United States' war in Afghanistan and the subsequent detention of hundreds of Al-Qaeda suspects in Guantanamo Bay in Cuba.

Can the fear of militant Islam ever justify detention without trial?

Or is it time for human rights campaigners to face up to the new tough realities of the global terrorist threat?
