Development
Exploring the rights of the child and a case study from the Philippines

•	Listen to Annie's story
	Ask students to make notes on : a) the key points of Annie's story: (dates; events; people) b) feelings linked to what happened

•	Discuss responses as a whole class

•	Write a newspaper article based on this story
		Listen to Joyce's story and an extract from the debate on children's rights. Ask students to consider a) the key facts of Joyce's story b) the role the media could play in telling the story and changing the world.
•	Prepare and present a news report on one aspect of this story

•	Listen to the interview with Gloria Macapagal, Vice President of the Philippines and with Father Shea Curren

•	Discuss responses as a whole class

•	Imagine that you are employed by a charity (e.g. Save the Children) and you are working to make children's rights a reality in the Philippines. Write a speech presenting the case for an international task force to protect children.

Extension activities

•	Read the poem out loud and discuss reactions to it. Prepare a group reading of the text. Present it with facts from the case study. •	Consider, and find examples, of the use of children in advertising, clothes modelling in magazines. Where do we draw the line between the acceptable and the exploitative?

•	Organise a class debate: a) 'This house believes that society's obsession with sex and sexual attractiveness creates an atmosphere where children can be exploited.' b) 'This house believes in the importance of a free press.'

•	Research newspapers for a week and consider the ways in which children are presented (as victims; as innocent; as violent; as vulnerable...)

•	Find out more about the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child eg. by contacting Save the Children to see what is being done to defend these rights today.
