The Role of the Media

Introductory activity - One
Developing understanding of the ways in which the Media tells the story and influences opinion and outcome.

•	Divide the class into pairs

•	Give each pair a copy of the key words

•	Ask each pair to put the words in order of importance (adding their own idea if they wish)

•	Discuss responses as a whole class

Introductory activity - Two
Reflecting on the Media's powers of persuasion


•	Select pairs of articles, (1 tabloid; 1 broadsheet) from same day

•	Outline key points to consider when looking at newspaper articles (headline / sub-heading / layout / use of images / use of language / opening paragraph / fact v. opinion / evidence / quotations etc.) Selection of pairs of articles, (1 tabloid; 1 broadsheet) from same day

•	Divide the class into pairs (or groups of 4/5 with a spokesperson)

•	Give each pair/group a pair of articles

•	Ask the students to : a) consider the headline and comment on how language is used; consider link with text b) compare the way the tabloid and broadsheet articles introduce their subject in the headlines and opening paragraphs c) compare and contrast the use of facts and opinions, layout, language (with examples) d) discuss which article they prefer to read and which article communicates most powerfully

•	Report back to whole class
