The drought affected Balkh province, Afghanistan

There have been warnings for some time of severe drought in Afghanistan this summer.

However, early signs of a potential disaster for thousands of people seem to have taken the authorities by surprise.

Already there have been reports of deaths in the northern provinces of Samangan and Saripul.

BBC reporter Harun Najafizada, who is based in Mazar-i-Sharif in the neighbouring province of Balkh, was called earlier this week by a local politician, asking him to go to see for himself the effects of drought not far from the city.
